[ SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM ]

The electrical, optical and magnetic properties of solid-state materials largely depend on the packing of molecules in the solid state. In other words, the properties of a solid depend on the arrangement of atoms, ions or molecules in the crystal. An understanding of the factors governing the crystal structure enables the design of solids for various applications in the fields of catalysis and separation, optical, electronic, magnetic and superconductivity, etc. Crystal Engineering is a multidisciplinary area of research that is based on concepts that are being used in supramolecular science and lies at the intersection of materials design and fabrication. The symposium will focus on the design, characterization and applications of newly engineered molecular solids, and the study of the non-covalent and covalent interactions responsible for their structures.

[ TOPICS OF INTEREST ]
Prediction of crystal structures, polymorphism and the importance of weak interactions; hydrogen bonds, π...π and other weak interactions in solids; supramolecular materials; metal coordination polymers; porous materials, catalysis and separation; magnetic and optoelectronic materials by design; biomaterials and biomineralisation; reactions and transformations in solids. A separate session to honour Prof. Richard Robson for his contribution to crystal engineering will be held.
