"Nanotechnology and Materials Science at the Intersections of Engineering, Biology and Medicine"

Studies of the connections among atomic/molecular structure, properties and function/performance have traditionally defined the broad and multidisciplinary reach of materials science and engineering. This lecture will deal with an examination of the application of this structure-property-function paradigm for the study of human health and diseases. State-of-the-art experimental and computational tools that offer quantitative insights into the mechanisms by which subcellular molecular reorganization induced by biochemical factors can influence cell mechanics, motility, cytoadherence and disease states will be examined in the context of infectious diseases, hereditary diseases and different types of cancer.
